Listen To Broadcasting History!
Listen to Gerry's live "on air" interview by Michael Greenhough, the main presenter for Radio 119 by downloading the podcast above. The interview made broadcasting history as first ever live radio show anchored by someone with learning disabilities.
The pioneering project is run in partnership with Bradford District Care Trust and Bradford Community Broadcasting 106 FM and is helping to turn people with learning disabilities into radio stars and programme producers.
Talking about the exciting project, Gerry said: "There are an increasing number of people with learning disabilities in the UK and we must ensure that they have full access to mainstream services, whether that is through education, training, sport or any other field.
Programmes like Radio 119 are a fantastic example of what can be achieved by partnership working. Giving people with learning disabilities the chance to fulfil their potential is an important goal for the government. I'm deeply honoured to have been asked to be the first guest on this groundbreaking live radio show. I'd like to congratulate BDCT and BCB, but especially the people involved in the making and presenting of this show. It would be great to see similar projects throughout the country."
Radio presenter Michael said of the project: "Through the confidence I have gained, I now feel happy to talk out in meetings and I am now representing my fellow service users in some very important ways."
In February this year Radio 119 began broadcasting once fortnightly, after a year of running 15 minute monthly programmes from their purpose built studio at BCB. For more information visit http://www.bcbradio.co.uk/
