Gerry under the spotlight
Gerry visited Dixons City Academy last Friday 5 March. He was invited to be the first interviewee in the school's new television studio. The room has been equipped to a standard to rival professional studios and will give pupils chance to experience life in a TV studio. Gerry was interviewed by two very competent presenters who had lots of interesting questions for him. Camera operators and technical operators were working behind the scenes and the end result was of a very high standard.
Questions to Gerry included: how did he get into politics? How does he manage to juggle his work in Bradford and London? Did he go to Vancouver? And when will the General Election be?
And Gerry's answers?
Gerry became involved in politics through his work as a Trade Union activist when he worked at Field Printers in Lidget Green. He joined the Labour Party and became a local Councillor, finally becoming Leader of Council in 1992. In 1994 he was selected to fight a parliamentary by-election in Bradford South following the tragic death of Labour MP, Bob Cryer.
He manages to juggle his time between London and Bradford thanks to a wonderful, brilliant, smashing team in his office in Bradford! He is always out and about in Bradford on Fridays and at the weekends when he holds regular surgeries so he has his finger on the pulse.
He did go to Vancouver to represent the Government at the closing ceremony. There were lots of members of the London 2012 team there to learn lessons from the last Games before it comes to London. Gerry mentioned that there will be 70,00 volunteers involved in 2012.
And the date of the General Election? Only one person knows when that will be!
